Strong, Hopeful, and Free

Strong, Hopeful, and Free

There will be times in life
where it takes
everything within you
to let go.

Letting go will
feel like an ending,
and in some ways, it is.
It’s the end of the way
you thought things would be.
It’s the end a chapter
you thought was still unfolding.
And now,
you’re at the edge of a road
that had no warning of a dead end.
It may take some time
to work your way into acceptance,
but in that place,
you are free to turn around
and try again.

You are free to trust:
not every road you travel
will end like this.
All around the world,
roads lead to other roads,
and if you keep traveling,
you will find them.

You will find love
and connection as you go.

You will also find that
if the future
you reach some other dead end,
you are still free to turn around
and keep traveling,
for now you know:
no matter what it looks like,
there will be other roads.
Letting go is an ending
before a new beginning unfolds.

Sometimes letting go
will be
the hardest thing
you’ll ever do
but you will find
that it loosens up something within you
so you can keep traveling
the way you were meant to.

This poem came to me after reading this part of “Reluctance” by Robert Frost:

Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?
